Incident Description
A protest held this evening on Hamstead Pier took a violent turn, resulting in 15 police officers injured and 24 arrests after tensions boiled over into chaos.
The demonstration began peacefully around 6PM, but quickly escalated when a group of protesters became aggressive. Rocks, glass bottles, and other objects were hurled at officers, prompting an urgent police response. Several fires were set along the pier, with flames visible from the shoreline as fire crews raced to the scene.
Officers from Hamstead Police deployed Public Order Units to regain control. The pier, a popular tourist spot, was evacuated as a precaution. Multiple police vehicles and public property sustained damage in the disorder.
Police confirmed that 24 individuals were arrested, facing charges including violent disorder, assaulting emergency workers, and arson.
A police spokesperson stated:
“Tonight’s events are deeply concerning. Our officers were there to protect public safety and facilitate lawful protest, but were instead met with violence and hostility. We are grateful none of the injuries were life-threatening.”
The 15 injured officers were treated at the scene and at Hamstead General Hospital. Cleanup and forensic teams remain on-site, and the pier is currently closed to the public until further notice.
Authorities are urging anyone with information, footage, or images of the disorder to come forward.
